Set Your Mind on Things Above
My message tonight is out of Colossians 3:2.
Colossians 3:2, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
Last week I spoke on the Words of God to believe what God speaks to us through His Word, by His Spirit. To believe what God has to say through His Word to set our minds to be engaged into the promises and life in God.
Colossians 3:2, directs us to do just that. Our minds must constantly be directed purposely to God the Father’s standards of Heaven. What He has ordained what Heaven should be because He who is the Almighty, has set a standard of perfection and excellence that is far above regular human thought. This Heaven that we are now a part of, due to belief, and eternally grafted into.
We are to dispose of the thought processes of the earthly realm, through grace. Not through some extreme works based ideal. We live not by works, but by grace, but I would figure you know where I am going with this, as our Father in Heaven is directing us to focus on Him and not our human circumstance.
Romans 12:1-2 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God-this is your true and proper worship. 2Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
We all know that we are currently and seem to always be in a battle concerning our minds. We are battered each day especially living in a first world country by the media, through people, and if you are engaged in spiritual things, we have spiritual conflict too. It’s all spiritual conflict.
We seem to always be in the fray. Our only solace being the times we are in the secret place with God, or being with others we gather with, like in this place where we can soak in the unity of the Spirit allowing the peace of God to comfort us.
Our enemy, Satan never gives up on his attempts to have some type of control of our thought lives in one shape or another. He and his compadres continually fight to find entry into our minds through any way possible to steer us out of our connection with our God in Heaven.
When we look at Romans 12:2 it is saying that the transformed mind in the Greek is a mind that has had metamorphosis, where we are basically changed from one person completely into a different person, and that new person sees totally different with a different heart, and different mind. All done supernaturally by the Grace of God.
And through that completely changed heart and mind, we are able to examine and discern what is beneficial and agreeable to God the Father. We understand and are now open to know the truth through His Spirit.
The continually transformed and renewed mind which is strengthened by the Word and Spirit, is not tripped up, nor led down a foul path by our enemy, because our thoughts are truly in the grasp of God through the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 4 beginning in verse 17 speaks of the new life, that we who believe do not walk in the former life, as the Apostle Paul put it. Not as the Gentiles did in the futility of their minds, minds that are transient, that only hold thought for a short time because they are morally depraved with vanity which is from excessive pride. Paul says in:
Ephesians 4:20-24 20That, however, is not the way of life you learned 21when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;(that excessive pride) 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
We should put off the old life, and be made new. The KJV states that we should be made new in the Spirit of our minds, or in the Greek, be renewed in our mental disposition or in the divine human thought to put on the new self. Through Christ, we have divine human thought. In other words, we have access to the supernatural through Christ in the Spirit. That’s Heaven based thought, but it only comes by “putting off the old self”.
When we come into a relationship with Christ, the old is supposed to pass away. There should be a dividing mark of old life and new life. Metamorphosis as I stated earlier. The old life that was led by a deceitful or prideful mind should be put off because of the transformation of the renewed mind through the of the Word of God.
The Word of God that has transforming power through the Holy Spirit. In the Book of Acts chapter 4 we see the transforming power. The Apostles Peter and John spoke to the chief priests and rulers in the Temple, and the people were astonished at their speech. Peter and John exhibited knowledge with bold confidence.
They were initially perceived as common men, but it was duly noticed that these men had been with Jesus. These were guys that were known, but not known like they were now. They had been transformed by the coming of the Holy Spirit and the Words of Jesus.
That should be us after an encounter with the Word of Truth through the Holy Spirit. That should be us after an encounter with Jesus!
2 Cor 3:18 “But we all, with our face having been unveiled, having beheld the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are being changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Lord who is the Spirit.”
Its saying that our blindness to the promises of God have been lifted, and we can now see the gloriousness of the Gospel, and the promises and decrees of God as John Gill put it. We now have spiritual sight. As we continue to behold the Word of God, it is constantly transforming us, and it states from glory to glory.
Many of the old commentary writers who wrote about the statement “glory to glory” believed that this was moving from one covenant, the Covenant of Moses to the new Covenant in Jesus Christ. Which is an awesome thing. But I believe like others that as we continue to receive revelation through the Word of God through His Spirit, this revelation from God moves us to heights of greater things in Christ. The word “glory” has multiple meanings, but what stands out is that it means magnificence and great beauty. I believe that we get to experience greater heights of the magnificence and beauty of Jesus in our lives as we grow in Him.
We were loosed from our human nature, into a nature that is the workmanship of God through Christ that is beautiful and glorious and ever growing in the Spirit. We get to experience that in our lives too.
But why do we not live in that new human nature, that should be beautiful and glorious?
Many people have confessed Christ, but many have not allowed Him to transform them. So their lives seem to be the same. He is the Word. He is the Spirit.
Ephesians 4:22,24, “you were taught to put off the old self, and from that revelation, we are supposed to put ourselves into a position to transform our minds so we can “to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
If we are walking in the new self, there should be transformation, and our minds should be opened up to think like it should think if you are led the Spirit.
Being led by the Spirit means that we then have the mind of Christ. The mind of Christ is set on heavenly thought.
That may be hard for some to agree with, but it’s because they do not know Jesus, or been taught to think about Him and what He has made available to us today.
All you have to do is look at what Jesus said to understand it.
Jesus was always preaching the Kingdom that it was at hand, and He showed it to us. Jesus did what His Father in heaven told Him to do. He processed the Word and did it.
John 5:19 “ So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.
When Jesus says “so that you will marvel’, He is saying so that you will discern and experience through your perception to take heed of what is happening. That’s the Greek there. So we see it, and think, wow! We put two and two together. For the Jews, it was wow, YAHWEH, the Lord God Almighty is doing this through Jesus. We see it!
Jesus’ connection to the Father and what He was doing, who did it Himself, was setting us up to do it to.
John 14:12, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”
So there is now a greater connection. It started with Jesus with the Father. Then us with Jesus and the Father. Then the Holy Spirit being added in. The complete Trinity in action, in and through us because of our faith.
Jesus was giving us a whole Kingdom view here. His followers saw Him do miraculous things. I imagine their generation and many of those before did not see any manifestations of the Lord for some time. Some knew the scripture, they knew what the Prophets of old had done, but now, what Jesus was doing was beyond the comprehension of their lives then. It was pretty dead in Israel.
What was happening was Jesus was moving His followers view things from a Heavenly perspective. They had to move from physical works, to the spiritual. We are even there today.
Unfortunately, the church has preached the Holy Spirit out of our lives, and we have preached signs and wonders of days past out too. We have morphed into creatures of the earth, instead of being transformed into those who operate in the Spirit and the Supernatural which was our first estate. God created man to operate that way. We have discussed that in length in the past.
I guess it is scary for some. But Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen, but the Believer who operates in the transforming power of God through His Word in the Holy Spirit will see evidence. They will see the reality of the Spirit Realm which far out distances and over powers the physically seen realm, because it travels into the unseen realm of the invisible heavens.
Jesus laid it out in His prayer in Matthew 6:10 “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.”
He told His disciples as well as us, to preach that the Kingdom of God which was at hand, and it is. We possess the Kingdom. We make the Kingdom move on earth. We hold the keys in the physical as well as the spiritual dimension. To move in the Kingdom and even possess it, our minds must be transformed to do so. In our transformed thought, we then have the responsibility to prove the will of God.
Why did all of those people in the 2nd Chapter of Acts, and throughout Acts come to Christ? The preachers of the Word believed in what they were preaching, and they backed it up usually by healing a bunch of people. They proved that there was a God who loved His creation. They proved the will of God. They gave evidence of His transforming power that they received by their will to follow Christ, because we have to want to do it. Our free will in action to set our minds on things above, and live them out proving with evidence the love of God.
When you look at us, and I say this also to myself, have we focused ourselves, if that is a good way of saying it, to a place where the world, it concepts, and directions have no power to move us?
Where we are compelled to do the Will of the Father because we are so transformed by Him.
Personally, I am on a journey to be in that place. I’m being real here. I should be raising the dead. I should be.
That is not far-fetched if you are sprinting toward the transformative power of the Word of God because your hearts and minds are focused to be like Jesus, to think like Jesus. The mind of Christ is in heaven, not here. So should our minds be.
A renewed and transformed mind can consistently bring the Kingdom Reality that Jesus lived on this earth in and through us, here. There are people today who live it. They move from glory to glory, and we can too.
An un-renewed or untransformed mind does little for the Kingdom. I believe many in the Church today have either believed that their mundane Christian lives are supposed to be that way, or they are too busy, afraid, or lazy. And people dying all around us going to hell, because of it. It’s sad, just sad, but all due to a mind that is not renewed and regenerated by the Word of God though His Spirit through our connection to Jesus.
Setting your mind on things above, sets the stage for the glorious to happen in our lives. We will no longer live in a box of expectations of assumption, presumption, or conjecture of the Spiritual life. We will live the Spiritual Life. We will do the Will of God. We will possess the Kingdom as God intended, and we will know His heart because we will be expressing it daily.
Living Glory to Glory, receiving immeasurable beauty out of the ashes of the prior life.
Because with God, all things are possible. If you believe.
