The title of my Sermon tonight, is What’s your Kryptonite?
If you have grown up like I did in the 60’s. and I’m dating myself, comic books were the thing, especially for us boys. DC and Marvel comics were the comics to buy.
I had boxes full of comics. Wish I had them now, they would be worth a bunch of money, but I should have kept my 55 Ford pick-up too. Anyway we had all of those super heroes, some just regular men and women who had great abilities to others who had supernatural abilities.
Tonight I want to direct our attention on one of the probably best well known super heroes out of DC Comics, Superman. Comics, books, movies, TV Shows, all about this guy.
Yes, Superman who came to the earth from another planet was just a normal baby by our standards on his planet, no super powers, but on earth had superhuman strength and abilities. All because of the earth’s lighter gravitational pull, and because of our yellow Sun that gave him strength.
I could go in a variety of different direction with this, but I want to focus on one thing with Superman, and it was his weakness. Kryptonite. Kryptonite that turned him into basically just a man.
And if you read the first comics from the 40’s, Superman was the superstar hero, until the Nov. 1949, #61 Comic, when actually red Kryptonite was introduced. This red kryptonite, made him weak, or normal like us. Actually the authors of the comic said kryptonite was Superman’s Achilles Heel.
Kryptonite, with extended exposure, could kill Superman. Kryptonite, Superman’s Achilles Heel was a thorn that kept Him from his supernatural state on this earth. And for any of you Superman fans out there, there is actually 22 varieties of Kryptonite, bet you didn’t know that.
Anyway Superman had his Kryptonite that kept him from his super natural state, so what is yours?
What keeps you, what keeps us from operating in the Supernatural power of God? What keeps us from Prophesying? What keeps us from giving out Words of Knowledge? Healing the sick, and being used to bring deliverance to people bound by this world?
Just coming from the Natural/Supernatural Conference last week, and knowing in my Spirit what God wants to do here in Kenosha, and really around the world, what keeps us from moving in His Divine Nature? What keeps us from operating in the fullness of the Holy Spirit?
And my first response is, unbelief, but there are many others.
I actually chuckle about using Superman as a prop for this message, but when you look at him, he was really unstoppable until this radioactive material from his own destroyed planet was introduced to him. It held him captive. It made him just a man.
And from my comic book days, I remember when he came in contact with Kryptonite, it weakened him so much that he could not fulfill with any expectation what had been called to do on this earth. He was a protector. He saved people’s lives. Kind a like what we are supposed to be here.
When I thought of Superman, my thoughts went right to Adam. I’m thinking Adam?
Yes, Adam The First Born of God and all mankind.
Adam after his creation had it all. He was the super man on earth, and when you look back, actually Eve was too, they were perfection. They walked with God in the Garden. I’ve spoke of Adam a lot, he and Eve were really special. Unfortunately, in the garden, they met their Kryptonite.
First it was in a tree. A beautiful tree with yummy looking fruit.
The tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Yes, Eve was tempted by Satan in the form of a snake, and Adam freely ate, but the forbidden fruit was known by the couple that they were not to touch it.
Eve even repeated to Satan what God said of the tree,
Gen 3:2-3, “And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”
The couple knew better, but they ate it anyway. This tree was standing alone in the midst of the garden, with another tree, the Tree of Life. They were both there. They could eat of the tree of life, but not the other. Only one the tree was off limits. But it was the forbidden one, the one you couldn’t touch.
Now bear with me here as I run on a little rabbit trail here, but I’ll tie it back in.
Now thinking of Adam and Eve in this situation, do you think they were so childlike that this tree was not temptation to them at all? I don’t know. The Word doesn’t say. But were they curious? I can’t say either. But knowing me, I would be. But I look through the jaded eyes of my imperfection.
Do you do think that maybe they wondered about it? Why won’t God let us eat it? Why will we die if we do? We do not know if there were conversations between them or with God about it.
But again I wonder if there had been a conversation with Adam and Eve about the tree and that crafty rascal Satan just went on their thoughts about it to push them into the fall?
It’s interesting how Chapter 2 ends with “And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.” It’s like wow, everything was good.
But Chapter 3 begins with:
Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
There are a couple things I was thinking about with this.
One, why would there be in God’s pure creation a “crafty” serpent when thinking about a physical snake? There was no sin there, right? There should be no craftiness. A snake should be like sleeping with a frog or something. The lion and the lamb thing.
We’ve seen pictures of a snake wrapped around a tree, speaking to Eve, and even the famous biblical scholar and theologian John Gill in his commentary speaks of Satan being in the snake.
So yes Satan, a spirit could have been in the snake, but I have questions about that. Wouldn’t Eve freak out hearing a snake talk? Did snakes talk back then? We don’t know. But I ponder that. But I can be weird.
The scripture in English, reads that a snake spoke to Eve, the woman, but after some investigation looking at the Hebrew; the Hebrew word for serpent is Nâchâwshit’s like a snake because of its hiss. The root of Nâchâwshis Nâchâsh, it is “to hiss”, that is, to whispera (magic) spell; an enchanter, actually an experienced enchanter.
Enchanter means Sorcerer or one who practices witchcraft. One who has spirits or demons at his command. We know that’s Satan. I was thinking from this, was it just him and the snake was just a representation of him. I don’t know.
Satan did manifest himself one way or another before Adam and Eve. We know that. Talking to a human likeness is more palatable to me, but we don’t know. He was there, we know that.
But what surprises me is that Satan says, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”
Out of nowhere, why would he say that? Something is missing here. We went from Adam and Eve were both naked and unashamed, and now Satan pops up with this question.
Why? It doesn’t say. Were they standing by the tree? What caused Satan to just pop up and ask this question?
was Adam and Eve talking about that tree and it opened a door?
There is no sin, being curious about something like that. But did itopen the door for temptation by the experienced cunning serpent using his witchcraft of words?
James 1:14, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.”
Now I do not know if she had a desire for it. Did the fruit look that good that she may have wanted to try it? The Bible does not say and I am not saying she did. But I question why Satan would pick that one thing to open that door.
Today, because man has repeated himself through the ages, the door is easily open to capture someone through some desire or thought. How we act and what we do is nothing new under the sun. But with Adam and Eve in the garden, this was the first time for deception, and sin.
Back in James verse 15says, “Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”
Satan the crafty experienced cunning serpent, triggered something in Eve by what he said.
Gen 3:1, “He said to the woman, “Did God actually say?” Concerning the eating of the tree.
She gave the correct answer. She knew the truth. “God said.”
Satan then says, “You will not surely die……...You will be like God.”
Gen 3:6, “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked.”
Continuing in James….“Desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”
Satan deceived Eve and she desired the fruit because it looked good, and the tree was to be desired to make one wise, Adam who was supposed to be leading, just freely ate and both those decisions brought failure and death to everything as we know it.
What stands out to me here is the power of the Serpent to deceive, the power of deceived desire, and the power of rejecting the Words of God.
Watchman Nee said, “The meaning of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is man acting apart from God, man pursuing goodness according to his self-will, man hastily and impatiently seeking after the knowledge that God has not granted, and man pursuing progress by his own means rather than by trusting in God. What all these mean is that man is simply acting alone and independently, outside of God.”
As a Christian, I believe that inherently we want to please God and do what is good, and right.
And for those of us, who believe in the operation of the Holy Spirit, we want to see that operation in our lives. Truly in our camp anyway, we want to see the manifestation of the Spirit in signs, wonders, and miracles. We want to operate in the Supernatural to bring healing.
When we look at Eve, she loved God. No doubt about that. He was a Father to her and Adam. Actually He was all they needed. But Satan’s deception caused her to second guess. That was her downfall.
Hmmm. The tree looked good, and I can know more. What is so bad about that? We do not know what she thought, there’s lots of commentary on that, but the fruit looked good and for more than one reason.
Eve’s desire, and rejection of what God said was her Kryptonite. Satan may have used his twisted words to deceive her, but Eve knew the truth, but went on her own instinct and that caused her to fall and to fail.
What is your Kryptonite tonight?
I truly believe that some of the desires of our hearts are put there by God. He implants that in us because of the plan He has for our lives. But I also think that the deceiver comes in and attempts to derail us from those desires, and attempts to implant different desires.
I am that example. Like I have said before, God through His Holy Spirit called me into the ministry when I was 16 years old. But the deceiver had already implanted in me that being a pastor was terrible and all hardship, and I would probably be miserable.
Really, I had a great pastor growing up, probably one of the best pastors I had ever been involved with, but with my father when he pastored, I experienced poor poor leadership by those he was associated with that turned me off. Plus, people in the church who were not Christian. I didn’t want to deal with that.
When the Spirit spoke to me, I rejected it. The deceiver was already at work. I began eating fruit from another tree, even though the Tree of Life was right there. I floundered for years, because I was called and went another direction. I saw miracles in my youth, something I should have been operating in then, but I took another path.
A path of desire to make money and be comfortable in the corporate life. Being exposed to people living in luxurious homes, with expensive toys, vacationing in exotic places. I wanted that. That was my desire. It was fruit ripe for the taking. But it was forbidden fruit that would only bring death.
But like Adam, in the end, all it brought was despair. I tried to ride the fence. But you can’t serve two masters. I know the Lord wanted me hot, but a split personality will keep you cold to lukewarm. I needed to be a new creation, not the person I was, not fleshly, but a man of the Spirit.
I am a son of God. Created in His image. Baptized in the Holy Spirit, being told by Jesus to heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely I have received; and freely I must give. That I’m to bring heaven to earth in His name. I knew that, as I know that now.
But as I look back, the deceiver, that serpent, would introduce new fruit, new deceptions, new Kryptonite just to keep me a man. Remember there are 21 different kinds. Right! Haha.
Yes, just a man. After I full surrender to Christ some years back, even after the Spirit exposed to me the vision of this church, I still walked in disbelief. My kryptonite. I was still deceived. I still listened to the deceiver. Like eve I knew the truth, I knew what God said, but I second guessed.
I still thought that I was not the man to do this. I did not have the skills to fulfill the vision. I was not smart enough, and the list goes on.
It was all sin for me to think that way. You can say that’s not that bad, but all Eve did was eat an apple. My type of thinking brought me death. There is no life in it, not by a long shot. I am supposed to be an overcomer. Right. I am supposed to be a believer.
A Believer by definition is a person who believes that a specified thing is effective, proper, or desirable, a Devoted Disciple and Follower.
The Spirit within me eternally desires God. I just needed to get on the same page. As a believer, I must be a devoted disciple and follower of Jesus Christ. That means that I believe in what He says.
Eve erred by believing Satan, and not what God said.
And looking back at Superman, he may not have had power over Kryptonite, but we have power over ours!
It’s the word, No!
Eve could have said “No” to the Snake. Because “God said.” That would have been the end of it. Satan slithering away wounded by the truth of the Word of God. God’s Word, the Sword of the Spirit.
When desire comes to us to sin. We say no! When doubt comes. We say no!
When Fear comes, No!
You’ll always be this way….. No!
Your addicted and you’ll never be able to break it, No!
You’re worthless, No!
The gifts of the Spirit aren’t real, they aren’t for you, No!
You have no Faith. HAHA! Oh Yes I do! Because God said!
What did God say? That’s where we turn to. Believing in what God says exterminates our Kryptonite, and the deceiving serpent must take a hike.
God’s Word will always be contrary to the ill words of the serpent. God’s Words will always quench the hiss, the whisper, and expose the truth to the enchanter and silence him.
Believing in God’s Word and what He says, will always expose us to a tree of life. We should not care about the other tree, because His Spirit already gives us knowledge of good and evil.
We must destroy our Kryptonite with the Word of God, and believe so it will open us up to the Supernatural workings of the Father. We must be free in the Spirit, so we can bring heaven to earth and pull people from their hurts, sickness and especially the flames. Because God said.
